When Life Gives You Lemons...

Change is good right? I've been trying to do some restructuring with my thinking lately and up until now it hasn't been working all that well. I found that living with the in laws was hard, but working with my volatile brother in law was what was really bringing me down. In a work situation he is a completely different person then who he is in a relaxed home environment. He gets angry with a snap of his fingers about something incredibly silly, he throws things, slams things, stomps around, and never once thinks his actions are inappropriate in the work place. He never apologizes for saying rude and impertinent things to my coworker or I, and in a day or two he acts like nothing has happened. It's hard going to work not knowing which side we're going to see.

So I did some soul searching and realized that I had to get out. I know I told him that I wouldn't find a job this fast but I had to. He was making the depression and anxiety sky rocket to the point where I couldn't control it. I applied for a job as an Administrative Assistant on March 12th. I got called to schedule an interview on March 13th. Interviewed March 16th, and was hired March 17th. Awesome yes? I thought so. Until I had to tell my brother in law.

I called a meeting with the CFO, my brother in law, and the office manager. I told them I had gotten a job at INL and would be starting the next Monday (not a lot of notice I KNOW, but I couldn't help that). My brother in law just kept getting angrier and angrier the more I talked about the job and answered questions from the CFO. I told them I'd still do all my work responsibilities two nights a week and on Friday's to keep them caught up until they could find a replacement. My brother in law was livid. He was so red in the face. When he felt the meeting was over he stormed out of the office, slammed the door, and sped out of the parking lot. I burst into tears. Here I am, with a great high paying job with benefits, and I didn't even get one encouraging word from the one that mattered most. I cried from 2:30 pm-10:30 pm when I went to bed. I couldn't stop crying. Jon and I tried everything to make it stop. I just can't figure out why I'm being punished.

All that happened yesterday. Today he hasn't said one word to me or even looked at me. Jon told me to be the bigger person and just pretend nothing happened and go on. But I can't. I have never in my life been treated with this kind of disrespect before and it's worse because he's family.

At this point I should be absolutely thrilled about this new job. I got a job through a company to work at INL. It takes people YEARS to get out there. But all I feel is hurt and anguish. I only have two more days to work here full time. I'm sure I'll get the cold shoulder and absolute gruffness from the BIL. I'll just need to dig deep and find a way to get my happiness to show.

I don't think our relationship as brother and sister in law will ever be the same and that makes me super sad. People say you shouldn't work for family. I think they're right.
