A lot of people say that males and females can't be friends. That may be true for some but I've had close male friends without romantic attachment since I was in the second grade. I remember swinging on swings with my friend Paul and we were jet fighters shooting down enemy planes. Or playing Trouble with Kevin during recess and missing the whistle to go inside. In high school my best friend Tyler and I were nigh inseparable and people would ask why we didn't date. I would scoff at them and look at them like they were crazy. Derek and Braun were also great friends with no romantic attachment. I loved it. They didn't play the stupid catty games that girls did, they weren't passive aggressive at all. They didn't get mad and not talk to me for days. Guy are simpler and I think I learned that early on and kept all my male friends close by. Of course now that I'm older I have my super awesome girl friends. But I chose wisely and chose the ones that don't play games and aren't passive aggressive. It's the best of both worlds.
But now I've been asked to give up my male friends because my husband feels threatened by them. Even though I've assured him that friends is all that we are. He makes me feel like I've done something wrong in having friends that have different genital parts than I do. I feel like if I have to get rid of my male friends then it would only be fair to get rid of my female friends too. What a conundrum. I've given up the home I love, the house I bought and love, the job I loved where I was told I would go up the ladder because I was just that good, my mountains, and now my friends who are my ultimate support system. I don't know if there will be anything left for me to give up after this. But I will because that's what Jon wants. It makes me tremendously sad knowing that I have nothing left. But I will try my best to fake the happiness I know he needs to see. I've decided I'm good at it. A pro if you will.
I won't tell my friends that I have to give them up. I'll just phase them out and pretend like its the distance that is at fault.
